What do you do for a living? Typically, the answer to this question tends to revolve around the title of our position. “I work in marketing.” “I’m an engineer.” “I work in insurance.” But, do these answers justify what we actually do for work?
At our annual Employee Appreciation Luncheon, Richard McGrath, President and CEO of McGrath Insurance Group, began his speech searching for an answer to this very question, one that truly defines what it means to work in the insurance industry.
“I am in the business of protecting the lives and belongings of businesses and families, giving them peace of mind throughout life,” he stated. Insurance is a profession that makes many people cringe, mainly because they immediately think you are trying to sell them something.
However, insurance is about much more than selling for the sake of selling; it is about selling individualized protection plans for the things that matter most in life. Every business, individual, and family, has a unique set of needs that simply cannot be addressed through a one-size-fits-all quote.
Yet for many, the thought of purchasing insurance has become somewhat of a hassle. In this fast paced world, consumers are looking for quick and easy ways to purchase coverage, which has led many to rely on quotes generated on the web. Unfortunately, insurance is not a service that can be rendered solely online.
Yes, I do believe there are certain aspects of the process that can be adapted to work online. But, with a completely automated process, it is important to think about who will be in your corner. Who will be working to make sure you have coverage that not only is affordable, but most importantly, gives you protection you can have full confidence in when disaster strikes?
Look at your independent insurance agent not as a salesperson, but as a protector of the things that matter most in your life. You should be left with a feeling of freedom from worry.
